Stair-Stepping: Rehabilitation implications of stepper exercise technique on exertion and hip extensor muscle activation

".....This study evaluated which of two different stair-stepping techniques produced a higher level of perceived physical exertion and whether magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can identify gluteus maximus activation during stepper exercise and/or differences in gluteus maximus activation between exercise techniques. The study was a prospective, single-blind, randomized, two-period, crossover trial. The stair-stepping techniques were 15-minute sessions of (1) short steps with arms unsupported (Short) or... full steps with arms supported (Full).......Back extension is a coupled action that involves the back and hip extensors .... In this study, we focused our assessment on the gluteus maximus because the activation of this muscle has been studied during stepper exercise with EMG .... and because this muscle is a crucial link in the transfer of forces from the legs to the back.....Stepper exercise appears to be a dual-purpose training modality that may be useful for low back pain rehabilitation because of its perceived increased training demand and its biomechanically based capacity to induce gluteus maximus metabolic activation......"
